Feminist Emergency Service: urgent grant for providing transport to refugees from Ukraine
About the group
Women Behind the Wheel is an informal group of women who use their driver’s license to offer safe and free transportation to women and children evacuating from Ukraine. There are over two thousand women in the group – they volunteer to the Polish-Ukrainian border, but also to the areas very affected by the war: Odessa, Kharkov, Chernihiv, and Mikolajov.
About the action
Many women tell us how much peace of mind they get from the fact that a woman is the driver and how much anxiety they feel when a man offers such a ride. Although we know that most men have good intentions, we decided to drive alone to give women who have already experienced trauma, even a little respite and peace of mind while travelling.
At current fuel costs, the money – mostly private funds of volunteers – runs out quickly. Thanks to a grant from the Feminist Emergency Service, one of the group’s managers will go on a long journey to Kharkov, where the situation is very difficult, in order to transport people seeking asylum to Poland.
Grant amount: PLN 3,000
