Warsaw Hellcats Roller Girls
Warsaw
MiniGrant: a series of open trainings encouraging new persons to train roller derby and a mini tournament in Warsaw.
About the group
Roller derby is often perceived as a feminist sport, supporting equality ideas, breaking various stereotypes of femininity. Women who skated in the first half of the 20th century were criticized for changing and ignoring traditional female roles such as housewife, mother, wife, and participation in aggressive sport was often perceived as immoral.
Warsaw Hellcats Roller Girls is a grassroots initiative created by a dozen or so people who decided to unite and practice a niche, girls’ roller-skating sport together. But roller derby is more than a sport! It is co-creation of a feminist and inclusive space where persons of all ages, gender and sexual identities, experiencing life in diverse bodies and environments, meet. Thanks to the roller derby, the players learn to overcome the restrictions that society imposes on women and persons socialized to the role of a woman.
Roller derby has become a means of expression for many women around the world. It shows the incredible power of sisterhood, being part of a supportive community. It allows you to shape your inner strength, character, and build a sense of agency.
About the action
Warsaw Hellcats Roller Girls wants to reach as many people as possible looking for a safe and friendly sports space. Therefore, as part of the MiniGrant, it will organize a leaflet and poster campaign encouraging roller derby training and conduct a series of free, open trainings for persons interested in joining the community.
