MiniGrant:
How to talk and write about sex work – creating a guide and a website

“Language is of great importance for shaping social attitudes, and thus impacts the lives and day-to-day of the group that is described by it”

About the group

Members of the collective gathered to prepare a guide on how to speak and write about sex work and persons performing this profession in a non-stigmatizing way. Thanks to education and language change in the media, as well as among clients and allies, it will be possible to start a wider change in the approach to the language describing sex work, and thus – to exclude offensive terms or terms evoking associations with the criminal context.

“Journalists do not have the tools to describe sex work and the reality of working persons with appropriate sensitivity, which results in reproducing the stigma”

About the action

“Three women” have already prepared a draft guide, while the MiniGrant will allow them to finance the composition and printing of the publication, as well as the development of a dedicated website. The publication will include recommendations on language, a description of legal models of sex work, including those in force in Poland, and its translation into everyday life and personal safety. The rights of sex workers and the possibilities for them to receive support will be discussed. The guide also includes recommendations on how to behave as a client or ally, so as not to duplicate violent behavior.
