The Pink Box Foundation
Wroclaw
About the group
We are a space of support for all menstruating persons. We want access to menstrual hygiene products to be as obvious as access to toilet paper.
Pink Box is a foundation that fights for access to sanitary pads and tampons, abolishes exclusion and menstrual taboos, educates, seeks equal access to knowledge about menstruation, and demands systemic changes in this area.
The Foundation, in collaboration with teachers, parents, caregivers, politicians, and medical staff, hangs pink boxes filled with free sanitary pads and tampons in public spaces. The first box was hung in Wroclaw in 2019 – today there are over 8,000 of them in Poland!
Members of the foundation emphasize that access to free sanitary pads, tampons, and other menstrual products in public space is, for them, a part of the fight for real equality and justice. An equally important goal of the Pink Box is to provide access to reliable education about menstruation at schools.
We also try to abolish the taboo that burdens menstruation in Poland. At school, the subject of menstruation is introduced laconically during biology lessons, and boys do not have access to this knowledge, which is so lacking – for example, only girls have classes about menstruation as part of the school curriculum. This makes menstruation a taboo subject that you don’t talk about with boys.
About the action
In the coming years, the Pink Box wants to ensure access to free menstrual resources for persons who need it especially, including refugees and migrants, as well as persons in hospitals. The Foundation already cooperates with centers for foreigners, refugee shelters, psychiatric wards, addiction treatment units, where more boxes are gradually being sent.
The second priority of the Foundation for the coming years is good menstrual education – dependable, inclusive, less hierarchical, and devoid of taboos. Menstruation is mainly talked about in the context of able-bodied girls and women, excluding other menstruating persons, i.e. trans men, non-binary persons, and women and persons with disabilities. The Pink Box Foundation wants to change this: it wants to create its own model of menstrual education and develop a nationwide network of menstrual educators who will carry the knowledge about menstruation further into the world.
