Signers’ Group Foundation
Krakow
MiniGrant: emancipation and development workshops for deaf, hard of hearing and hearing women, which are connected by the knowledge of the Polish sign language (PJM).
About the group
Our actions support the emancipation of women with hearing impairment. We are vocal about the problems they face, draw the attention of the public, media and politicians to the barriers they have to overcome, and increase public awareness. We are a small foundation with lofty ideas. Signers’ Group Foundation deals with popularizing Polish sign language, promoting the idea of accessibility and activities for the marginalized Deaf community, including promoting its culture and supporting grassroots activism.
The foundation’s team is composed exclusively of girls (including the hearing impaired and the Deaf) – translators, lecturers, and sign language enthusiasts. The members of the group strive to create an accessible and safe space for persons from groups that are marginalized not only due to hearing dysfunction – a community dominated by women with varying degrees of ability is created around the foundation, in which there is a place for queer, non-binary, and transgender persons.
Our activity is a response to the real problem of marginalization of people from the still under-noticed community and aims to increase awareness and sensitize society to the problems of this group, and to give it a sense of agency.
About the action
Signers’ wants to enable women, including the culturally Deaf, for whom PJM is the first language, to discover feminism. It is planning to organize emancipation and development workshops to build self-esteem, the ability to deal with emotions, and the awareness that a group of women can be a support for themselves. They hope that the workshops will become the beginning of building a support network, allowing participants to meet persons experiencing similar difficulties and strengthening the sense of agency of the group.
