Girls’ Power Center in Elk
Elk
MiniGrant: Girls’ Power Center in Elk, which is co-created by 5 women and 12 girls, will organize menstrual workshops for girls and their mothers.
About the group
Through our activities, we want to empower girls in being themselves, strengthen their sense of fulfillment, change the way of thinking of young and older women which is permeated with stereotypes. We want the whole space to live in, full rights and all the freedoms. The power of women starts with the power of girls!
The Girls’ Power Center in Elk is a space created for girls, where each of them can safely and without bounds discover her abilities and strength, appreciate her body and learn how to cooperate with others. GPC is active thanks to the work of five volunteers and founders called “older girls” and the enthusiasm and ideas of twelve participants – “younger girls”. The members of the group meet once a week to learn from each other, share experiences and develop feminist values together with the guests of the workshops.
Girls reported the need for such workshops for their peers from school, as well as for their mothers, who often find it difficult to discuss topics related to adolescence, because they have never talked to their mothers about it. The taboo and shame are passed on to next generations. We want to put an end to this!
About the action
As part of the MiniGrant, Girls’ Power Center in Elk will conduct a series of menstrual workshops with a sex educator, one of which will be for moms and two for girls. During the meetings, the participants will talk about the way genitals are built, learn about the menstrual cycle and ways of predicting the next period, but also – tame the fear of the unknown and prepare for their first menstruation.
