Batty Aunts Informal Group / Grupa nieformalna Ciotki Klotki
The power of female pensioners!
This female group comprises four friends and pensioners: public official, teacher, librarian, and bank clerk. All admit to having experienced discrimination themselves for reasons of gender, age, and level of ability. They want to act in support of their local community, yet they also want something for themselves. They are very much aware what is missing in the lives of women over sixty in their own town.
They decided to use mini-grant funds in two fields: healthcare and access to culture. They reached out to women over sixty from their own town and neighbouring villages with their campaign of free cervical smear tests – it turned out that women in this age group are not entitled to National Health Service-financed tests. Limited access to culture is another issue: Batty Aunts organised a trip to attend a concert at the Polish National Radio Symphonic Orchestra hall in Katowice.
Cervical pap smears for women over sixty
The need for free cervical pap smears for women over sixty is considerable, which is why Batty Aunts have decided to continue the campaign from FemFund grants. They also found out that women their age would like to learn to swim (not only for health reasons), use computers, and handle basic applications: they came up with an idea of organising a beginners swimming course for women over sixty, and a computer course. Battling with economic and logistic barriers to culture access for women over sixty, they will use the grant to organise another trip – this time to attend a concert at the Centennial Hall in Wrocław.
Grant amount: PLN 8,800.00
