Asylum Library
Lublin
MiniGrant: A series of thematic queer circles for the LGBTQ+ community
About the group
We want to create an open space where we can afford to take our time, act in harmony with each other, and learn in the process.
The Asylum Library is a place for meetings and education of queer people, which is co-created by three activists. Her idea was born out of the need for access to LGBTQ+ literature, which is not provided by schools or public libraries. Thanks to the involvement of people from different countries, the library has already collected over 1,000 publications that are publicly available to readers from Lublin. In the Asylum there are meetings of the book club “Q-booxs”, exhibitions, and workshops. Currently, the library is working on making space and funds available to young people living in Lublin for the implementation of their ideas related to queer culture.
The longer we talk to the queer community in Lublin, the more we hear about the need for meetings during which there will be space to talk about oneself and one’s experiences.
About the action
The group’s goal is to build a community around the Asylum Library, creating a place of openness and tolerance, a queer-phobia-free space where queer people can feel safe. Hence the idea to organize a series of thematic queer circles – e.g. “Courage in queerness” and “Celebration of one’s own identity” – which will be the starting point for a conversation, exchange of experiences and bonding.
