Association for Disabled Persons “Seven” / Stowarzyszenie na rzecz Osób Niepełnosprawnych “Siódemka”

Silesian Province

Seven was founded and is run by a group of mothers who look after persons with disabilities. They run two-day centers for persons on the autism spectrum and with deep couplings, who do not find any other support in adulthood, after completing their education. The members of Seven identify themselves as feminists because, as they write, they put the welfare and development of mothers first – relieving them from 24-hour care, ensuring the right to development and self-fulfillment, enabling them to leave the house. “We also want to change the image of mothers in society. We do not only take, but also are able to give something from ourselves”.

“We forgot that we are important too. As mothers, we are always put last. We want to finally do something for ourselves”

Their idea for action results directly from conversations with mothers and observation of everyday life. The members of the Seven know what it is like when mothers, fearing social evaluation, fall into self-exclusion more and more deeply, withdraw from social life and shut themselves up at home. And they want to change it!

Using the funds from the mini-grant, they will conduct a series of dance workshops to relieve the stress of everyday life and release their emotions and energy. They will also take part in self-defense classes because they want to strengthen their assertiveness and be able to react to verbal and physical harassment they encounter. They also want to organize meetings with a psychologist and nutrition specialist. “We want to finally do something for ourselves”, emphasize the members of the association. “Be stronger, more confident, get to know your abilities, remember that there is something beyond caring for a disabled child. For our children to be happy, we must be happy too.”
