Academy of the Young Deaf/ Akademia Młodych Głuchych
The group has been formed by several young deaf women active in the “Academy of the Young Deaf” Foundation. They work daily with young people with hearing impairments, organising educational, cultural, and integration events. Their intent is to empower deaf young people, and improve job market, education, and culture accessibility. They also plan to develop and expand their own knowledge (also in the field of women’s rights).
They used their mini-grant to organise something never done before: they developed the first feminism and women’s rights campaign targeting the deaf community. Since the Polish sign language did not include the term “feminism”, they… invented it themselves!
On self-defence, assertiveness and sexuality in Polish Sign Language!
As part of their regular co-operation with FemFund, the girls intend to organise three training sessions for women from the deaf community over the coming year. The first one will be a WenDo self-defence and assertiveness course they had been thinking of since the violence against women prevention workshop they had organised themselves with the use of the previous mini-grant money. The girls are also planning to develop in areas of emotional intelligence and time management skills. The final workshop will focus on sexuality, sexual contacts, and psychosexual orientation.
“Our workshops offer an opportunity to improve soft skill competencies, and gain knowledge allowing our participants to advance their social and emotional functioning. Our project activities target the dissemination of the women’s equality idea”, the girls have announced.
Grant amount: PLN 8,800.00
